GIA EDUCATION
GIA has graded some of the most remarkable diamonds in the world. The 14.83 carat Spirit of the Rose diamond - graded Internally Flawless, Fancy Vivid purple-pink by GIA - is the largest purple-pink diamond to ever appear at auction and commanded US$26.6 million at auction in November 2020. Its name derives from dancer Vaslav Nijinsky’s legendary performance in the Russian ballet, Le Spectre de la rose. The ballet tells the story of a young girl who falls asleep after attending her first ball and dreams of dancing with the spirit of a keepsake rose. Gary Schuler, Worldwide Chairman of Jewelry at Sotheby's, says of the stone: "the numerous facets and shades of pink dance in front of your eyes in a mesmerizing way." The stone's name not only refers to its color but also celebrates the fact that it was cut from the largest pink diamond crystal ever mined in Russia - the 27.85 carats Nijinsky rough.
